Daily quote widget for iPhone: your words, your typography
A quote widget is the simplest thing you can put on a Home Screen, and also the one people are pickiest about. It has to be the right words, in the right typeface, at the right size, on a background that suits the rest of the screen. Most quote apps get one of those right and lock the rest. You get their quotes, their fonts, their look.
WidgetAI lets you describe the whole thing. This post covers three ways to fill the widget with words, the templates to start from, what you can do with type, and how to pair a quote with something that changes through the day.
Three ways to fill it with words
A quote of the day. WidgetAI has a built-in quote-of-the-day connector. Start from the Quote template, or type "a medium widget with a new quote every day, author underneath, in a serif." The connector supplies a fresh quote daily, and the AI lays it out. This is the zero-effort option.
Your own fixed line. Sometimes you don't want variety; you want one sentence you chose. An affirmation, a line from a book, a reminder of why you're doing the thing you're doing. Just tell the AI the words: "a small widget that says 'Slow is smooth, smooth is fast' in a bold condensed font on black." The text is part of the design, so it never changes unless you change it.
Your own list (Pro). If you keep a collection of quotes or affirmations, Pro users can point a widget at a custom HTTP API that returns the line to show as JSON. A tiny endpoint that picks a different entry each day, or each hour, is enough: a small script, a serverless function, a notes export behind a URL. The widget shows whatever the endpoint returns. The setup is in how to build a custom HTTP API widget. It's more effort than the connector, but it means the widget shows your words, not a stranger's.
Templates to start from
- Quote is the classic: quotation marks, the line, the author, room to breathe.
- Greeting is a time-aware line ("Good morning" through to "Good night") with the date, which pairs well with a short quote underneath.
- Gradient Mood is a colour-first tile with a single line of text over a soft gradient, for people who want the widget to be mostly atmosphere.
Pick one and talk to it. "Swap the gradient for a deep navy." "Make the quotation marks huge and faded behind the text." "Use a handwriting-style font for the author." Each message reshapes the tile, and when it looks right you add it to your Home Screen. The full explanation of what the AI does with your message is in how the AI builds your widget.
What you can do with the type
Because the widget is a real design and not a preset, typography is where you get to be opinionated:
- Serif or sans. A quote in a serif reads like a book; the same words in a geometric sans read like a poster. Ask for either, or for a monospace if you want it to feel like a terminal.
- Outlined text. WidgetAI can draw an outline around text, which keeps a quote legible over a busy gradient or a photo without a solid plate behind it. "Outline the text in thin white so it stays readable."
- Gradient backgrounds. "A warm sunrise gradient behind, with the quote in off-white."
- Size and weight that follow the length. Short quotes can be enormous; long ones need to shrink. Tell the AI the mood and it will size the type to fit, and you can nudge it: "a bit smaller, and give the author line more space."
Small widgets suit a single short line. Medium widgets have room for a two-line quote, an author, and a date or small icon. WidgetAI supports both sizes; large widgets aren't available yet.
Pairing a quote with the day
The nice trick is putting a quote next to something that changes, so the widget feels alive even though the words are steady. A few combinations that work on a medium tile:
- Quote plus the date. "Today's date in the corner, quote in the middle, author at the bottom." The Date Stamp template is a good starting point for the date half.
- Quote plus the weather. "The forecast and temperature on the left, a short quote on the right." See our iPhone weather widget guide for the weather side.
- Quote plus a photo. A favourite photo behind, an outlined line over it. That's the Photo Caption idea, covered in the iPhone photo widget guide.
- Quote plus a greeting. The Greeting template's line already follows the time of day; ask for a short quote underneath it and the tile reads differently in the morning and at night.
You can also do the opposite of a daily rotation and make the tile a fixed piece of your Home Screen's design: one line, one look, unchanged for months. Both are a sentence away.
How often does it change?
The quote-of-the-day connector serves one quote per day, so the widget changes once daily by design. If your own endpoint changes its answer more often, iOS still controls when the widget actually redraws: you set a target interval from every minute to hourly, and the system fits it into its refresh budget. Expect a changing quote to update a few times an hour at most, not every few seconds. That's how every iOS widget works, explained in how iOS widget refresh works. For a quote, it's the right cadence anyway.
FAQ
Can I use my own quotes in the widget? Yes. Type a fixed line into the design and it stays until you change it. For a changing list of your own quotes, Pro users can point the widget at a custom HTTP API that returns the line to show as JSON.
Does the quote widget change every day? With the built-in quote-of-the-day connector, yes: one new quote daily. A fixed line never changes; a custom endpoint changes whenever it returns something new, within iOS's refresh schedule.
Can I change the font and colours? Yes. Ask for a serif, sans or monospace, outlined text, gradients on the background or the text, and any size or weight. Each change is one message.
Is the quote widget free? The quote-of-the-day connector and fixed text are on the free plan, which includes 1 widget and 10 AI edits a month. A custom HTTP API for your own list is a Pro feature.
